Amani Toomer vs PHI
This may be the highest I've ever had Toomer. He's been a solid WR for years, but something seems to hold him back from the true elite in the rankings. Some of it's Hilliard, some of it's Collins' erraticism, some of it's Tiki holding the key to the offense. And it's not like this matchup blinks at you in neon as you peruse the slate for the week. But most of the usual suspects at the top of the list are either sitting (Harrison, Burress and Ward), injured (Moulds) or facing tough matchups (Owens, Moss against a corner his height). So this is partially out of better options. Still, the Eagles are hurting in the secondary (although they've covered the holes reasonably well so far), they're at home, they know the Eagles well, and Philly gives up the 4th most yards to WRs so far. Toomer has never done particularly well against Philadelphia, but this is the weakest Philly has been in a while.

Donald Driver at STL
This is an "unfortunate circumstances" ranking for Driver. He's certainly capable of having a big day, and the pressure will be on the Packers to put up points in order to hang with St. Louis. On the other hand, two big barriers stand in his way: Brett Favre is not an effective QB inside an enclosed facility, historically, and the Rams have been very effective against WRs, even with expensive FA Jason Sehorn not on the field. Look for Driver to lead the team in receptions, but it shouldn't likely be a day that will bump him into the top half of the rankings.

Rod Smith at MIN
Certainly the most improved part of the Vikings has been the personnel in the secondary. They are hitting hard and making good initial tackles. They are still in the bottom half when it comes to fantasy points against WRs, though. And the loss of Plummer is good news at least for Rod Smith, who seems to get his best stats from Steve Beuerlein the last couple years. I suspect the Broncos will lose this game (home teams off a bye thing again), and may have to go to the air often late. This is a workload prediction--he should see most of the balls.

Kevin Johnson vs SD
Picking the Cleveland receiver du (whatever's French for 'week') is prognosticating suicide. But I'm not afraid of death, and the matchup for any of them is too tempting not to guess at. I think the Chargers will try to hold William Green down, but they can't cover all parts of the field, and Couch will make them pay. Johnson seems on a 2 crappy games--2 good games cycle (how's that for a hopeful rationalization!), and his 2 crappy games were the last two weeks. Good luck.

Recaps - 10/21

  • Joe Horn, 5th place. I'll take it.

  • This is why I'm ready to take Joe Horn at 5th. WRs are such a comedown; I shouldn't save them for writeup last every week. Anyway, Toomer feh.

  • I don't know WHAT I was thinking having him at 3, but I bet you didn't think he'd finish 9th, either.

  • Terry Glenn was 3rd. Picking the Dallas receiver is an impossible challenge.

  • Bruce with more yards, Holt with the crucial score (fantasy wise, anyway).

  • Ladies and gentlemen, the DNA Triplets! Koren, Rod and Lav..laverno...Laverne! Koren is the worst offender of this group, clearly.

  • Chad Johnson, the island of calm in the DNA storm.

  • Johnson was a bad pick straight up, Mason just got the short end of the slim passing yards.

  • I was going to say Domanick Davis was my pick of the week, but nearly pegging Randy Moss--not at 1st but at 12th--is pretty sweet. He should get credit for the TD pick and roll, but he doesn't. Ha!

  • Holt gets the TD, I had Bruce with the TD. Oh well. No worries with either this week.

  • Three more egregious DNA samples.

  • Just placing a WR in the top 20 who actually finishes in the top 20 is victory enough, so the Bennett call is cause for much joyousness.

  • Look at how I treated the greats! Rice didn't even make the cut, while Owens had a great day.

  • Stallworth beat my expectations despite leaving the game hurt. Either he just ran past those Falcones, or they stopped running.

  • Anything in the 30s looks like all you can hope for with the WRs. Just getting most of the top 20 right is plenty challenging.

    Accuracy - 30.24%
