Even though we are not even midway through the preseason, much has taken place in the ever-changing world of the NFL. (For example, I have been forecasting players division by division so long that Brett Favre retired from the NFL only to return.) In all seriousness, however, hardly a day goes by in which a news item comes across the wire doesn’t cause those of us in the fantasy football world to adjust our rankings and/or projections slightly.

Therefore, in anticipation of my “Big Boards” that will be released over the next several Tuesdays, I thought it would be helpful to provide each of you with my most updated projections for the upcoming season with a brief explanation included for each team.

Note: Players whose names are in italics have seen their projections changed since the initial division-by-division breakdown.

(^) - Projection represents the player’s floor; he has significant upside.
(+) - Projection may be selling the player short; he has some upside.
(-) - Projection may be overselling the player; he is a slight risk.
(!) – Projection represents the player’s ceiling; he is a significant risk.

Note: The grey highlight in each team’s schedule reflects a road game.

Jackson’s hand injury forced me to go conservative on his Week 1 matchup. Lynch, who has an ankle injury of his own to deal with, appears set to take Jackson’s workload if he is limited or must sit out vs. Miami. But make no mistake – Jackson is the unquestioned RB1 in Buffalo and Spiller is his complement, much like the Saints’ duo of Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. The only other change is the addition of Stupar at TE and subtraction of Shawn Nelson. After flashing his potential earlier in the offseason, Nelson has reportedly regressed (and now is suspended for the first four games of the season) while Stupar has stepped up. Given the offensive line issues in Buffalo, Stupar may have low-end TE2 appeal at some point, but no one outside of Evans from the Bills’ passing game is even worth drafting.

It’s hard to believe the originator of the “Wildcat” offense, QB coach David Lee, hasn’t been able to get anything out of Pat White. But whatever the reason is for his lack of development, White appears to be on the roster bubble. Either way, the major change for the Dolphins is that I gave Brown one more healthy game and beefed up his rushing numbers a bit, although I believe Williams is still the RB to own this season in Miami.

The key changes made to the Patriots projections were to Moss’ final numbers. He has reportedly been quite serious about making his contract-year push in 2010 and it is kind of a scary thought what he is capable of when he is dialed in. Even at 33, he is still one of the best WRs in the game and capable of winning fantasy games some weeks almost singlehandedly. I still believe Welker is a poor bet to last the season and his totals reflect that. When healthy, he is a near-lock for 100+ receptions with Brady in this offense. With Torry Holt no longer a concern, Tate should be comfortable in his role as the WR4. His upside is obviously limited with so much quality in front of him, but should Welker’s knee not hold up, Tate would have some appeal in deeper leagues.

I have gone back and forth several times on the subject of Greene’s long-term prospects of remaining healthy for a full 16-game schedule. After some considerable debate, I’m back to believing he will miss considerable time and need Tomlinson to pick up the slack. However, both players’ outlooks have changed marginally since my initial projection.

Sometimes, mistakes happen – such was the case with Flacco. I use a number of formulas in my Excel spreadsheet to put together these projections and after comparing the numbers I had down for Flacco to my expectations of him, I went back to the formula to see if it was correct. Sure enough, Stallworth’s numbers were absent from the equation. Obviously, that oversight has been fixed. The only other alteration was adding another TD to Heap’s total.

Palmer gets a healthy 230-yard, two-TD boost to his overall numbers as the Bengals added Owens shortly after my AFC North projections was released. As one might expect, the move had a trickle-down affect on the rest of the Cincinnati receivers. Unless Palmer is truly a shell of what he once was (in other words, if his elbow has been an issue all along), I don’t see any reason why Ochocinco and Owens can’t post low-end WR2 fantasy numbers. As for Antonio Bryant, it is starting to sound more and more like the Bengals will be forced to place him on IR or release him since his surgically-repaired knee continues to be an issue.

In regards to Cleveland, I have very little to say – I added three interceptions to Delhomme’s total. Perhaps he finds himself again in the West Coast offense, but even in Delhomme’s heyday, he threw a lot of picks and that was a healthy Steve Smith at his disposal. Massaquoi may end up being the playmaker in Cleveland, but expecting a 35-year-old QB coming off a horrendous season to turn it around is a bit more risk than I am willing to accept.

Perhaps it is my background as a psychology major in college, but when commissioner Roger Goodell states that Roethlisberger has done more than necessary to prove that he has gotten his life “back on track”, it sure sounds like he is leaning toward reducing Big Ben’s suspension from six to four games. Therefore, every player saw his final numbers changed as a result of Roethlisberger’s good behavior. In a subject that I’ll touch on more next week, it is time to panic if you are either a Mendenhall owner or plan on becoming one soon. I fully expect Isaac Redman to assume goal-line duties for the Steelers, which obviously sends Mendenhall’s fantasy stock downward.

The loss of rookie Ben Tate was definitely a blow to the Texans’ depth chart, but in fantasy, injury usually means opportunity and this case is no different. Foster already was pulling away from the pack before Tate’s injury, but with the rookie gone now, Foster’s fantasy stock skyrockets. Certainly, Slaton will probably steal his fair share of the work in the passing game, but for now, Foster will be asked to carry the load. Just a few weeks ago, Foster could be had in Rounds 8-10 in 12-team leagues; now, his name will come off the board in fantasy drafts probably in the fourth or fifth round.

The top four players had their numbers massaged a bit since the release of the AFC South projections, with Manning, Brown and Wayne seeing their totals increased while Addai lost a bit of favor in my eyes. I imagine Addai will still be the back to own in PPR leagues as he is a trusted option in the passing game (as a receiver as well as a blocker), but in non-PPR, I could easily see Brown performing at the same level as Addai. As much as I like him as a player, I can’t see how Garcon will live up to the sixth-round ADP he currently has, according to Fantasy Football Calculator.

A minor tweak for the Jags – I tagged Sims-Walker with one missed game due to injury as he really has yet to prove he can stay healthy, so Thomas and Dillard/Williamson each received a slight bump up. It should also be noted that Jennings has secured the #2 RB role behind MJD. While Jennings – who was competing with rookie speedster Deji Karim – wasn’t going to see a lot of time on the field regardless, the winner of that battle has a pretty nice schedule against the run in the event of an injury to Jones-Drew. Also, if Miller cannot get his foot healthy pretty soon, pencil in Lewis for a career year. The reports out of Jacksonville camp have been glowing regarding the fifth-year TE, so while I expect Thomas to be a capable WR2 for the Jags, it wouldn’t be surprising if Lewis surpassed his career highs in catches (41), yards (518) and TDs (2).

At the time that I was doing my AFC South projections, I chose not to go with the bad feeling I have about Johnson staying healthy all season long. This time, I have him missing one game due to injury. Regardless, if his fantasy owners can get through his first five games or so in decent shape record-wise, they will be rewarded over the final 10 contests.

Due in part to Moreno’s preseason injury as well as those injuries to some of his teammates, I have come way down on Moreno, dropping more than 200 total yards, two TDs and nine receptions from his initial projection. And yes, Buckhalter will steal more of his workload than what Moreno’s owners would like. Keep in mind, though, that even without a single 100-yard rushing performance, four games with 10 or fewer carries and a zone-blocking offensive line that was asked to “power block”, Moreno came up just 53 yards short of a 1,000-yard season as a rookie. You may also remember that he admitted to hitting the “rookie wall” down the stretch, something that should not happen this year as he should have a pretty good idea where his fitness level needs to be. While his supporting cast has lost a considerable amount of talent, his overall situation is better from a fantasy perspective than it was last season.

Speaking of RBs that I have toned down my expectations for, I have shaved 200 yards and two TDs rushing from Charles’ initial forecast as well. I don’t think HC Todd Haley is doing much more than playing mind games with Charles, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Jones stole all the short-yardage and goal-line carries. With that said, I’ll stick by what I have said all preseason: the 2010 Chiefs’ offensive line is not on the same level as the 2009 Jets’ offensive line. If Jones could only muster 4.2 YPC behind one of the best run-blocking lines in football last year, what is he going to do in Kansas City this year?

I have changed very little with my final numbers for the Raiders, trimming a mere 15 yards off Bush’s rushing total. I still have him projected to do great things this season and he may not have a choice in that regard if McFadden doesn’t return quickly from his hamstring injury. “Run DMC” is slated to be on the field for the all-important third week of the preseason, but he may have missed too much practice to give HC Tom Cable a reason to give him significant playing time while Bush has done nothing but impress.

The big change with my projection of the Chargers is 5-9, 243-pound Mike Tolbert, who needs to be on the radar of deeper-league fantasy owners. If things continue as is (Tolbert received all the carries inside the 10 during the Chargers’ preseason game vs. the Bears), holdouts LT Marcus McNeill and Jackson won’t be the only problems Mathews has in putting up a fantasy season to remember. While owners continue to use a first- or second-round pick on Mathews in 12-team leagues, it is highly likely he will not see much action on third down (Sproles) or in short yardage. Believe it or not, I have the rookie rated as a fifth-round fantasy RB and it is only because I believe so much in his ability that I have him doing that well. He’s a great keeper and dynasty league pick, but the team appears committed to work Tolbert into the mix and the goal line makes a great deal of sense for a man of his size and ability. So, as long McNeill and Jackson continue to hold out, it is going to be nearly impossible for me to feel any better about Mathews this year as a fantasy RB.
