Running Backs

Must Start:

Thomas Jones @ BUF: He hasn’t been able to find the end zone yet this year but the Bills will help him with that this week. The Leon Washington threat is almost non-existent, so expect Jones to get a bunch of carries and finally find his way to the promised land. He has looked great every time he has touched the ball and the touchdowns will start coming this week.

LaMont JordanLaMont Jordan @ MIA: Unless your starting running backs consist of Tomlinson, Addai, and Gore, LaMont Jordan should be in your lineup. Considering how poorly many of the top backs have performed so far this season, Jordan has been a great surprise for owners who risked a middle round draft pick on him. Plug him into your lineup in place of Steven Jackson, Larry Johnson, or MJD.

Adrian Peterson v. GB: Minnesota can’t throw the ball, leaving them to pound away on the ground. Chester Taylor will likely be back this week, cutting into AP’s opportunities. Keep Peterson in your lineup though, he will still see around 20 touches and will make the most of them.

Cedric Benson @ DET: Benson won’t see additional carries with a new quarterback because the coaching staff long ago lost faith in Rex Grossman. However, the Detroit defense will have to respect Griese’s ability more than Grossman’s, making for a little more running room. Realistically though, we are talking about Detroit, which means Benson will just have to dodge a bunch of missed tackles and defensive miscues on his way to the end zone.

Laurence Maroney @ CIN: Cincinnati is giving up 32 points per game and Maroney will eventually find pay dirt. He is getting too many carries to not get six eventually. If any week ever looked ripe for a TD, its this one. Hopefully Sammy Morris doesn’t vulture another score.

Grab A Gatorade:

Edgerrin James v. PIT: Pittsburgh will continue destroying opposing offenses in Week 4. They are giving up less than nine points a game and have yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season. Add in a quarterback controversy and Arizona is looking like a poorly managed, continually losing franchise. In other words, it is business as usual for the Cardinals.

Marshawyn LynchMarshawn Lynch v. NYJ: I really like Lynch, but after watching the Bills offense stagger around aimlessly with Trent Edwards at quarterback, I can’t get too excited about his prospects. Some might think it can’t be any worse than when Losman was in there, but that isn’t true. Lynch will be seeing a lot of safeties in the box this weekend while Edwards finds his way.

Rudi Johnson v. NE: If he is healthy, Johnson isn’t a bad start. However, as of right now he is a game time decision. Since this is a Monday night game, his owners have to decide whether to risk getting a big, fat zero out of their starting running back a day early. If you doubt your chances of winning this week, give him a shot. If you believe your odds are good, go with a back you know will give you some points. Or, even better, grab Kenny Watson right now. Even if Johnson plays, the Patriots have only allowed one rushing touchdown in three weeks.

Jamal Lewis v. BAL: Sure, this is a grudge game for Lewis. Don’t forget that the Ravens remember him too. I think the Baltimore defense is better equipped to punish a running back than Lewis is able to humiliate a defense. By the way, rushing touchdowns allowed by the Ravens this season: zero.

Brian Leonard @ DAL: The hot free agent pick up of the week gets to face the Cowboys in his first game as a starter. Unfortunately, the Rams offense is in shambles and have stumbled out to a 0 – 3 start to the season. To make this benching even more obvious, Dallas is pretty solid against the rush, with only a single rushing TD against.
